A mutilated female foetus, missing its head and a hand, was discovered on the premises of Government Medical College (GMC), Akola, around 1 PM on Monday. Stray dogs had damaged the foetus, sparking widespread outrage.
The hospital’s gynecology department confirmed that all newborns in its care were safe, indicating that the foetus was likely abandoned on the premises.
The foetus was discovered near the GMC police outpost, raising security concerns. CCTV cameras in the area were non-functional due to ongoing construction work.
According to media report, city Kotwali police have registered a case against an unidentified person based on a complaint by the GMC administration. Police station in-charge Sunil Vaidande stated that, as per the preliminary probe, the foetus was discovered after a stray dog was seen gnawing at the flesh and carrying a body part. Hospital authorities then searched the area and found the headless foetus, which was also missing a hand.
GMC Dean Dr. Meenakshi Gajbhiye stated that the incident could be an attempt to tarnish the hospital’s reputation. She clarified that newborns delivered at the hospital are marked with identification tags and ink marks on their feet, which were absent on the abandoned foetus.
