With the monsoon bringing lush landscapes and cooler weather, it also raises the threat of electrical mishaps. In light of this, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MahaVitaran) has released a public advisory urging citizens to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the rainy season.
Emphasizing that electricity, while unseen, can cause serious harm, MahaVitaran has outlined safety protocols for both households and public spaces. Residents are advised not to touch wet electrical devices, switches, or walls, and to keep windows and balconies free from any electrical setups. If water leakage is detected near electric meters, consumers should immediately shut off the main power supply and inform the utility.
As a key preventive measure, MahaVitaran recommends replacing copper wires in main switches with aluminium alloy fuse wires, which help trigger automatic disconnection during short circuits. A tingling feeling upon contact with metal fixtures or water pipes could signal electrical faults and should be addressed without delay. The installation of safety devices like ELCBs (Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers), RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers), or MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) is also encouraged. Additionally, all electrical plugs should be disconnected during lightning storms.
For public safety, citizens must maintain a safe distance from any fallen or tilted electric poles, exposed wires, transformers, and junction boxes. People are cautioned not to touch or attempt to move downed cables and to avoid tying animals or vehicles to utility poles or hanging clothes on them.
MahaVitaran noted that monsoon-related power disruptions are often caused by damaged insulators, underground cable faults due to water seepage or digging, and incidents involving uprooted trees or lightning.
The utility company urges the public to remain vigilant and follow these guidelines strictly to prevent accidents and ensure community safety during the rainy season.
