In an aggressive move to combat pollution and reclaim Nagpur’s green cover, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched its most ambitious plantation campaign yet — targeting 1.64 lakh trees this monsoon, more than double last year’s effort.
From the bustling Medical and Mayo areas to the Air Force zone and Gorewada Biodiversity Park, the plantation will cover nearly every corner of the city. Compared to 2023’s goal of 70,000 trees with a ₹3.97 crore budget, this year’s expanded drive will require a significantly larger outlay, though the exact figure remains undisclosed.
The campaign is part of national and state-level missions like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ and ‘Harit Maharashtra’. Civic participation is central to the initiative, with residents offered free saplings at all 10 municipal zone gardens to encourage hands-on involvement.
A standout feature is the use of the Miyawaki method — a dense, multi-layered planting technique — to grow 36,000 trees in locations like Hill View Society, Dabha, and Telangkhedi Road. These mini-forests are expected to grow rapidly and boost biodiversity.
Tree species like neem, jamun, babul, pipal, and mango have been selected for their environmental and medicinal benefits, while rain trees will line cement road corridors.
With over 50,000 trees planned for Gorewada and 40,450 near key institutions like Medical and PWD, NMC is turning urban greening into a city-wide movement — one sapling at a time.
