In a significant crackdown on drunk driving, Nagpur Traffic Police have registered 636 cases under the special drive ‘Operation U-Turn’ between July 10 and July 28, 2025. This figure is particularly striking as it accounts for more than 50% of the total 1,324 drunk driving (DD) cases registered in the city from January 1 to July 28 this year.

The sharp rise highlights the intensity of the campaign in the past few weeks, as enforcement teams conducted surprise checks and deployed breathalyzer tests at key locations across the city. Among the top zones during the 18-day operation, Indora topped the list with 94 cases, followed by Kamptee with 86 cases, Sonegaon with 78, MIDC with 77, and Sadar with 65 cases.

In contrast, the total number of DD cases reported since the beginning of the year in these areas stood at 176 in Indora, 166 in Kamptee, 162 in MIDC, 154 in Sonegaon, and 110 in Sadar. This indicates that more than 40–60% of this year’s enforcement action in these zones happened within the recent 18-day period alone.
‘Operation U-Turn’ was launched by Nagpur Police to curb road accidents caused by alcohol-impaired driving and to enhance overall traffic safety. The initiative involves intensified night patrolling, surprise checkpoints, and strict action against violators, particularly during weekends and late-night hours.

Police officials have confirmed that the operation will continue in full force in the coming weeks. Citizens have been urged to cooperate, avoid driving under the influence, and contribute towards making city roads safer for all.
