The Bombay High Court Nagpur bench has refused to grant a stay on the much-debated Sitabuldi Tunnel project in Nagpur. The decision clears the way for the continuation of the project, which has faced widespread objections from local residents and environmental activists. The petitioners had urged the court to halt the work, citing environmental concerns and alleged irregularities in the project’s planning and execution.
The court, however, dismissed the plea, observing that the petitioners failed to provide sufficient grounds to justify stopping the work. With this order, the authorities can proceed with the construction as planned.
The Sitabardi Tunnel project is part of Nagpur’s traffic management and urban infrastructure development plan. However, it has attracted criticism for passing through sensitive areas, which activists claim could affect the environment and nearby heritage structures. Concerns were also raised about the lack of comprehensive environmental and safety assessments.
Despite repeated objections, the High Court emphasized that there was no compelling reason to halt the project at this stage. The decision has sparked mixed reactions in the city, with supporters citing improved traffic flow and opponents worried about ecological and structural risks.
