In a remarkable initiative celebrating Raksha Bandhan, students of Lalitha Public School in Nagpur have created what is being claimed as Maharashtra’s largest Rakhi, measuring an astounding 34 feet in width and 44 feet in length. This artistic marvel was crafted under the theme “Gauravshali Bharat – Ek Nayi Udaan” (Glorious India – A New Flight) and is a tribute to India’s strength in defense, science, sports, and culture.
The giant Rakhi has been dedicated to several national icons: Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh – known for their roles in Operation Sindoor, Indian chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh, and IAF Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla, who recently returned successfully from the Ax_4 space mission. Their photographs are beautifully embedded into the Rakhi’s design, reflecting the pride and accomplishments of modern India.
The project involved around 150 students who spent 15 days creating the Rakhi under the guidance of the school’s Art and Craft Department. School authorities now plan to submit it for recognition in the Limca Book of Records as Maharashtra’s largest handmade Rakhi.
School Director Chetna Tank shared that this annual tradition of crafting theme-based Rakhis helps instill creativity and national pride among students. This year’s Rakhi, she noted, also promotes the message of women empowerment and sustainable art, as it was made using recycled materials such as old newspapers, wallpapers, waste cloth (chunnis), and colored papers. Bamboo sticks were used to create the structure’s base, while threads and ropes formed the Rakhi strands.
This initiative is not just a festive celebration, but a symbolic salute to India’s heroes and the values that define a proud, self-reliant nation.
