Nagpur City has secured the 22nd rank in the recently released Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2025 Cleanliness Rankings, marking a significant improvement from its previous 27th position announced on July 17. This change comes after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) raised objections to the initial ranking, citing the omission of several key parameters in the evaluation process.
Background of the Ranking Revision
Initially, in the survey of cities with a population of over 10 lakh, Nagpur was placed at 27th position. The NMC strongly objected, stating that the survey overlooked several crucial aspects, including technological innovations, citizen participation in waste management, and the actual cleanliness conditions across city zones.
Following a review of NMC’s objections, the concerned authorities reassessed the evaluation and revised Nagpur’s rank to 22A.
High Scores in Door-to-Door Waste Collection
In the revised results, door-to-door garbage collection, which carries a 30% weightage, saw Nagpur receive 90% marks, while waste segregation, which initially earned only 1%, has now improved to 60% marks. Nagpur has also been awarded 1 Star under the GFC (Garbage Free City) Rating and received the ODF Water Plus Certification.
According to the revised results of Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, Nagpur now ranks 22A among 40 major cities and 25A among 414 Urban Local Bodies in Maharashtra.
Recognition for City’s Cleanliness Initiatives
A recent report from the Central Government appreciated Nagpur’s cleanliness progress and participatory initiatives. NMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary stated that the corporation had brought the scoring discrepancies to the attention of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, after which the marks were re-evaluated.
In recent months, several initiatives like ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’, Backlane Cleanliness Drives, C&D Waste Management, Compressed Bio-Gas Projects, Biomining Projects, and extensive citizen participation campaigns have significantly contributed to the city’s improved ranking.
