With the city preparing to celebrate Ganeshotsav in the coming days, citizens, Ganesh festival committees, and volunteers have been urged to showcase social responsibility by ensuring an eco-friendly celebration and minimizing pollution. This appeal was made by Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal and Municipal Commissioner & Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari during a meeting with representatives of Ganesh Mandals today.

The meeting, jointly organized by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the Commissioner of Police, and the District Administration, was held on Tuesday, August 12, at Kavivarya Suresh Bhat Hall. The session was attended by Joint Commissioner of Police Mr. Naveenchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner Mrs. Vasumna Pant, Additional Commissioner Mrs. Vaishnavi B., Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Mr. Vinayak Mahamuni, Additional Commissioner Mr. Ajay Charathankar, Additional Commissioner of Police Mr. Shivaji Rathod, Mr. Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Niketan Kadam, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Shashikant Satav, Additional District Collector Mr. Praveen Mahire, and other officials from various departments.

The Ganesh festival will begin on August 27. Public Ganesh Mandals were guided on obtaining necessary permissions from various departments, maintaining communal harmony, creating awareness through theme-based decorations, providing prior intimation to the police regarding immersion processions, regulating DJ sound levels, and avoiding the playing of obscene songs during processions. The dignitaries emphasized that if all committees follow these measures proactively, Nagpur’s Ganeshotsav can set a unique example in the country.
For the past two years, NMC has been offering an online system to grant permissions for public Ganesh Mandals to avoid any inconvenience in the application process. Under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, this initiative has received a positive response. Through NMC’s official website, Mandals can complete registration and obtain necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from different departments in one go. Mandals registered last year will not need to register again but will still have to secure the required permissions. Deputy Commissioner Mr. Milind Meshram explained the process to committee members using a PowerPoint presentation.
Dr. Chaudhari urged all Mandals to opt for eco-friendly Ganesh idols. Last year, 98 percent of public Mandals in Nagpur installed idols made of eco-friendly Shadu clay. This year, all Mandals are encouraged to continue this practice. In addition to the online permission system, an “One Window” facility has been set up in each zone for offline processing, enabling committees to obtain permissions from all concerned departments at one location. Separate artificial ponds will be provided for immersing idols up to four feet in height and for those taller than four feet. An additional facility will be available at Gorewada for immersing larger idols.
Commissioner of Police Dr. Singal appealed to Mandals to uphold the sanctity of Ganeshotsav while fulfilling their social responsibility. He urged them to prepare theme-based decorations that spread positive social messages. He also announced that the best Mandals promoting eco-friendly practices and social awareness will be felicitated. During the meeting, various queries and suggestions from the participants were addressed.
