A tragic incident occurred late Thursday night (21st August) when a youth was mauled to death by a leopard at a farmhouse near Vichkhed village.
The deceased has been identified as Chandrashekhar Vyankatesh Balki (39), a resident of Vichkhed. Chandrashekhar, who worked as an electrician at a company on the Koradi-Nagpur highway, was resting at his farmhouse along with his friend Vilas Bapurao Ghode (50). Around midnight, the leopard attacked Chandrashekhar, leaving him fatally injured.
Local villagers, shocked by the sudden incident, rushed to the spot but were unable to save him. His body was later sent for postmortem. The news of his death spread grief in Vichkhed and the surrounding villages.
After the incident, local residents demanded urgent measures from the Forest Department to curb increasing leopard movement in the area, which has created an atmosphere of fear among villagers.
Forest officials, led by Rajkumar Chopde, confirmed the incident and assured that efforts are underway to trace and manage the leopard. Meanwhile, Chandrashekhar’s funeral was performed in Vichkhed on Friday morning, with hundreds of villagers paying their last respects.
