Nagpur: The Digambar Jain community is preparing to observe the 10-day holy festival Paryushan Parv, also known as Daslakshan Parv, beginning Thursday. The festival, rooted in forgiveness, self-discipline and non-violence, emphasizes practicing virtues to purify the soul.
The celebrations will commence with Maha Abhishek, Pujan, and Pravachans at prominent Jain temples across the city. Shri Saitwal Jain Sangathan Mandal, Mahavir Nagar, announced that a series of religious and cultural programmes will be held at Shri 1008 Adinath Digambar Saitwal Jain Temple for the entire duration.
Each day of the festival will focus on one Jain virtue—Kshama (forgiveness) on August 28, Mardava (humility) on August 29, Arjav (straightforwardness) on August 30, Shauch (purity) on August 31, Satya (truth) on September 1, Sanyam (restraint) on September 2, Tap (austerity) on September 3, Tyag (renunciation) on September 4, Akinchanya(non-possessiveness) on September 5, and Brahmacharya (celibacy) on September 6.
Daily rituals include Abhishek at 6 am, followed by Pujas, evening Pravachan at 7:15 pm, Bhakti Sandhya at 8:30 pm, and cultural events at 8 pm. The cultural lineup features a devotional bhajan evening (Aug 28), solo dance competition (Aug 29), devotional song contest (Aug 30), fancy dress competition (Aug 31), recitation of Namokar Mantra and Bhaktamar Stotra (Sept 1), and a senior citizens’ Bhakti Geet programme (Sept 3). Plays, skits, quiz contests, and other activities by pathshalas and community groups are also planned.
The festival will include special observances: Anant Chaturdashi on September 6 with Abhishek at 10 am, Sammed Shikhar Puja at noon, and evening Bhakti Sandhya at 8:30 pm. The concluding day, Samvatsari on September 7, will be marked by Maha Abhishek at 9 am, Pushpanjali, and the sacred Kshamavani ritual of seeking forgiveness at 7:30 pm.
