A deeply tragic incident has shaken the city as contractor Munnabhai Verma, a resident of Rajan Nagar, ended his life due to severe financial distress caused by non-payment of government dues.
Verma, who had undertaken multiple projects under the Public Works Department (PWD) and other state government departments, had nearly ₹30 to ₹40 crore in pending payments. Despite repeated follow-ups, the dues were not cleared for months, pushing him into mounting debt and unbearable economic pressure.
Local contractor associations had been warning for weeks that just like farmers, contractors too were being pushed to the brink due to long-pending bills. Unfortunately, those fears have now turned into a harsh reality with Verma’s tragic death.
The incident has sparked outrage among the contractor community, which has already been protesting against the government’s apathy towards clearing legitimate dues. They allege that while projects are completed on time, payments remain indefinitely stuck in bureaucratic delays, leaving contractors burdened with loans, interest, and liabilities.
Verma’s untimely demise highlights the growing financial crisis among contractors in Maharashtra, and raises serious questions about the accountability of government departments in handling contractor payments.
