Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in collaboration with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), is framing the city’s first-ever Healthy Streets Policy to improve urban mobility and enhance public well-being. The initiative is aimed at making Nagpur’s streets safer, greener, and more inclusive.
The policy focuses on strengthening infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists by introducing wider footpaths, dedicated cycle tracks, and safer intersections. It will also prioritize walking, cycling, and public transport over private vehicles.
To make the policy citizen-driven, NMC has invited residents to share their experiences and suggestions through a survey that will remain open until September 25 at bit.ly/41NDbVY. Officials have urged citizens to participate, noting that the survey takes only a few minutes and will play a key role in shaping the framework.
Highlighting the urgency, an ITDP study found that vehicles on Nagpur’s major roads often cross speeds of 50 km/h, posing serious safety hazards. The policy is therefore seen as an important step toward building safer, more efficient streets, especially for children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.
