Nagpur: Barely two days after its inauguration, the Gyanyogi Dr. Shrikant Jichkar Flyover on Amravati Road was abruptly closed on Saturday afternoon, causing confusion among commuters. The closure, first reported by Lokmat Timeson Sunday, prompted officials to dismantle a traffic-blocking pandal, following which movement across both lanes of the bridge was restored. However, the adjoining service road remains incomplete, with barricades placed to restrict access.
Motorists were left puzzled, many attempting risky U-turns near Ravi Nagar and Shankar Nagar after the petrol pump, unaware that the service road is yet to be constructed. The flyover, inaugurated on Friday, had already witnessed an accident the same day when an auto-rickshaw carrying a gas cylinder hit a pedestrian near the RTO office. Following the mishap, traffic on the bridge was suspended until Sunday.
When vehicles were finally allowed back on the flyover, several were seen making dangerous U-turns barely 50 metres from the petrol pump square toward the RTO, creating collision risks, particularly as traffic entered the bridge on the green signal from Bole Petrol Pump Square. Though barricades had been set up on one side of the flyover, no traffic police were deployed at the site. The barricades—initially installed to facilitate the removal of the pandal—remained in place even after the obstruction was cleared.
Adding to the problem, two large trees still stand on the service roads between Bole Petrol Pump Square and the RTO in both directions, delaying the completion of approach routes.
