The changes and simplifications introduced in GST will greatly help in expanding business, increasing compliance, and reducing disputes. GST 2.0 will provide significant relief to major companies across the country and is expected to bring benefits to smaller firms as well. This will lead to a reduction in costs, giving a competitive advantage in exports. The benefits of these reforms will be passed on to the business sector. These views were expressed by Chief Commissioner of CGST, Central Excise & Customs, Sandeep Puri.
He was speaking at an interactive program organized by Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) Taxation & Corporate Law Forum in association with Vidarbha Tax Practitioners Association on 18th September 2025 at VIA Auditorium, Nagpur.
Sandeep Puri said the new system will make GST easier and simpler for both taxpayers and the department. He said the government has made several efforts to strengthen GST. He pointed out that although there have been challenges in implementing GST since 2017, India has emerged as one of the best countries in the world in terms of GST system and structure.
He added that the department is focusing on increasing transparency and revenue growth. Today, India has become the fifth-largest economy in the world, and the growth rate is higher compared to other countries. To sustain this growth momentum, industry and trade need to contribute positively. The government has also introduced many reforms and is continuously making the GST system more taxpayer-friendly. GST 2.0 has been launched with these objectives in mind.
Focus on Growth : Sandeep Puri is of the opinion with higher disposable income, tax collection will also increase. The government is continuously working to simplify rules. The department’s focus is on ensuring that genuine taxpayers do not face difficulties while strict action is taken against tax evasion. For this, new technology and artificial intelligence tools have been introduced. GST 2.0 has been designed with this approach.
Lower Costs, Strong Vigilance : Sandeep Puri said customers should benefit from tax reductions. The central government is making efforts to ensure that the benefits of reduced costs reach consumers. The government has made India’s image stronger in the world and shown that the country can compete globally.
Earlier, CA Ashok Chandak, Chairman of VIA Taxation & Corporate Law Forum, in his welcome address highlighted the significance of the reforms announced after the 56th GST Council meeting. He stated that within 24 hours of issuance of the notifications on rate rationalisation and amendments, VIA organised this programme to guide industries. He explained the rationalisation benefit should be passed to the final consumers, however, on the other side, industries face challenges with regard to inverted duty structure and accumulation of ITC. Citing the GST hike on coal, he warned of rising power and industry costs, urging authorities to consider such issues sympathetically.
VIA President Prashant Mohota welcomed Sandeep Puri and said the industrial sector would fully cooperate in ensuring compliance with tax laws with complete transparency and simplicity. The industry is of the clear opinion and mandated to pass on the benefit of GST reduction to the consumers.
VIA Vice President, CA Naresh Jakhotia, made opening remarks and also conducted the program. He said that historically it is seen that tax friendly environment results in rise in tax collection.
