In connection with the death of a young biker who fell into a pothole, Lakadganj Police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the Nagpur Municipal Corporation–Railway contractor and the site supervisor.
The incident took place on September 16 near the Itwari Railway Bridge. Mahesh Santoshkumar Farjane (24), a resident of Sant Tukdoji Nagar, was working in a private company. On the evening of September 16, while returning home on his bike, he lost balance due to a large pothole filled with rainwater. The pothole was not repaired despite repeated complaints. Mahesh fell, suffered severe head injuries, and died on the spot.
The death created tension in the locality. Citizens demanded strict action against the contractor and railway authorities. Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s relatives, police registered a case of culpable homicide against the contractor and supervisor.
In several parts of the city, road and flyover construction is ongoing, leaving potholes and construction material scattered on the streets. A glaring example is the Sitabuldi area, where just a month ago the police had warned the contractor after repeated accidents. Though temporary repairs were made, the situation again worsened after fresh rains.
Due to these potholes, citizens riding two-wheelers face daily risks and injuries. Complaints had been repeatedly made to the police and NMC about the unsafe conditions. Considering the seriousness of the incident, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has instructed strict action against negligent contractors and ordered immediate road repairs.
