Panic has gripped the students of the girls’ hostel at Akola Government Medical College after repeated incidents of stray dogs entering the hostel premises. even reaching the second floor of the building. According to the students, the dogs not only wander through the corridors and staircases at night but have also bitten some residents and often charge at them aggressively.
Despite multiple complaints made to the college administration and security officials, no effective measures have been taken so far. “We have raised this issue several times, but no one takes it seriously. The dogs enter the hostel almost every night. We are scared to step out of our rooms after dark,” said one of the residents, requesting anonymity.
Students report that the animals roam in packs, often fighting and barking loudly in the compound late at night. Several girls have sustained minor injuries after being attacked while walking between the hostel blocks or returning from the library.
The fear among hostel residents has grown so intense that many have started skipping evening study sessions or outdoor activities. “We are medical students, and our schedules are already stressful. Living in constant fear of dog attacks is unbearable,” said another student.
Parents of several residents have also raised safety concerns, demanding that the authorities act immediately. The local municipal body has reportedly been informed but has yet to conduct a proper dog-catching drive in the area.
Activists have urged the Akola Municipal Corporation and the college administration to coordinate a sterilization and relocation drive under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme. They have also suggested improved fencing, night security patrols, and better lighting around the hostel premises to prevent further incidents.
Until action is taken, the girls at the Akola Medical College hostel continue to live under the shadow of fear — a situation that highlights the growing urban stray menace and the urgent need for humane yet effective intervention.
