Industrial and commercial consumers in Maharashtra are bracing for higher electricity costs after the State Cabinet cleared a fresh ₹0.90 per unit hike in electricity duty. The increase, applicable to industrial, commercial, and bulk users, will raise the levy from ₹11.04 to ₹20.94 per unit, translating into an average 1% rise in power bills for manufacturing and business establishments.
The decision comes as the government seeks to generate funds for the Kusum Yojana, which aims to distribute 6.5 lakh solar pumps to farmers. While 4.23 lakh pumps have already been installed, officials said the shortage of funds prompted the move to tap industries for resources.
Energy expert R.B. Goenka criticised the decision, warning that it could further burden already struggling industries:
- “Industries are already paying the steepest power tariffs in the country.”
- “Textile and steel sectors will be the worst hit.”
- “The government provides subsidies on one hand and recovers them through duty hikes.”
With monthly power bills ranging between ₹1 lakh and ₹1 crore, many companies are expected to pass on the additional costs to end consumers. Businesses are already under pressure from rising labour expenses and raw material prices, Goenka added, cautioning that the move could drive industries to relocate to neighbouring states where power tariffs remain more competitive
