After months of legal and technical delays, work has resumed at Futala Lake following the Supreme Court’s approval for the project’s revival. A team from Maha Metro carried out a detailed inspection this week to assess the condition of the viewing gallery, shops, and lighting systems, which have remained idle since early 2024.
Engineers checked for structural damage, water seepage, and electrical faults caused by long disuse and monsoon moisture. The team’s preliminary report recommends restoration of decorative lighting, façade repainting, and realignment of electrical conduits to prevent further corrosion.
The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has also begun cleaning and de-weeding operations along the lakefront and pedestrian corridor. Overgrown vegetation and stagnant water had made the area unsafe and inaccessible. “The site will be cleared before our joint inspection begins,” said an NMRDA official.
Once cleaning is complete, both agencies plan a civil and electrical health audit to assess the readiness of the musical fountain and illumination systems for reactivation.
Maha Metro PRO Akhilesh Halve confirmed that a detailed inspection report has been submitted.
“We have reviewed the gallery structure, shops, and lighting systems. Restoration work will start soon in coordination with NMRDA,” he said.
The ₹200-crore Futala beautification project, jointly undertaken by NMRDA, NMC, and Maha Metro, aims to transform the historic lake precinct into a major urban leisure and tourism zone.
