After public outrage and multiple accidents, PWD orders demolition of newly built speed breakers
The Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to remove the speed breakers built at both ends of the Adiwasi Gowari Shaheed Flyover following widespread public opposition and a series of accidents. The speed breakers, constructed by the World Bank Division of PWD, had turned into a safety hazard, causing several motorists to fall and get injured in the past two days.
Local residents criticized the move, saying there was no need for speed breakers at the flyover and that they were not marked with white stripes, making them nearly invisible to approaching drivers. The absence of road markings increased the risk of accidents, especially at night. After Lokmat highlighted the issue in a report on Friday, the department took note and quickly painted the humps with white stripes, but this only offered partial relief.
Motorists continued to complain that the speed breakers were too high and closely placed, making it difficult for two- and four-wheelers to pass without jerking or bouncing. Responding to the public concern, Superintending Engineer Janardan Bhanuse explained that the humps were initially built to slow down vehicles ahead of height barricades meant to restrict heavy vehicles. However, after receiving complaints, the department has now ordered their removal.
The PWD has assured citizens that the speed breakers will be demolished soon, bringing an end to the inconvenience faced by daily commuters.
