In a coordinated early-morning operation, a joint team of Nagpur Police, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), and Nagpur ATS arrested a key associate of self-styled preacher Changur Baba from Ashinagar in north Nagpur on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Idhu Islam (40), was apprehended around 5 am from a narrow lane in the Ashinagar area. Sources said Islam played a crucial role as a helper and financial manager for Changur Baba, who is under investigation for alleged large-scale and organised religious conversions.
According to officials, the operation was executed swiftly to avoid any chance of escape. Teams from Pachpaoli police station and other city police units were also part of the action, ensuring tight coordination and security during the arrest.
Police sources confirmed that an arrest warrant had been issued against Idhu Islam, and he had been on the radar of Uttar Pradesh police for over two years. Despite sustained efforts, he had managed to evade arrest until the joint operation in Nagpur.
Investigators revealed that Changur Baba had deep roots in Nagpur several years ago, where he allegedly began his activities in open grounds and public spaces. Over time, he shifted his base and operations to Uttar Pradesh, expanding his network. Law enforcement agencies believe Islam was instrumental in managing funds and logistical support linked to these activities.
The arrest is considered a significant breakthrough in the ongoing probe into alleged forced and inducement-based religious conversions. Further interrogation of the accused is expected to provide vital leads regarding the network, funding channels, and operational methods linked to the case.
Police officials said further action will be taken based on information gathered during questioning, while the accused is likely to be handed over to Uttar Pradesh ATS for further legal proceedings.
