Garbage collection services were severely disrupted across nearly half of Nagpur after a sanitation worker was crushed to death under a garbage truck container, triggering a strike by waste collection staff and affecting door-to-door services in multiple zones.
According to Lokmat News Network, the incident occurred around 10.20 am on Sunday at Budhwar Bazaar in the Hanuman Nagar zone. The deceased worker, identified as Siddharth Ghodke, was employed as a helper with AG Enviro. Preliminary information suggests that the garbage truck’s container had jammed, following which the driver asked Ghodke to fix the issue. While he was behind the vehicle carrying out repairs, the container suddenly collapsed on him, causing severe head and chest injuries. He was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, employees of waste collection contractor AG Enviro suspended work across Zones One to Five, bringing door-to-door garbage collection to a standstill. With AG Enviro’s workers on strike, nearly 220 garbage collection vehicles remained off the roads throughout Monday, leading to mounting waste and inconvenience for residents.
In an attempt to manage the situation, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) deployed 40 small vehicles and 30 tipper trucks from its Solid Waste Management Department. Despite these efforts, household waste collection remained badly affected across large parts of the city.
The situation began to ease only on Monday evening after an agreement was reached regarding compensation and employment support for the deceased worker’s family. Following the assurance, some garbage collection vehicles resumed operations late on Monday night.
