After a nine-year gap, elections to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have been conducted, paving the way for the formation of a new civic body. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has returned to power for a fourth consecutive term with a clear majority. However, the process of constituting the new civic government has seen a slight delay as the reservation status of the mayor’s post is yet to be finalised.
An official order in this regard was issued on Monday and signed by Urban Development Department Deputy Secretary Aniruddha Jewlikar, fixing the date for the mayoral reservation draw. The draw for reservation of mayoral posts across 29 municipal corporations will be held on January 22, 2026, at the Mantralaya in Mumbai, under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Urban Development.
Once the reservation draw is conducted on Thursday, the reservation status of the mayor’s post will be officially declared. Following this, the municipal commissioner will issue a notice for the mayoral election.
As Friday is the only working day available with the commissioner, even if the notice is issued immediately, the election process is expected to take place only after Republic Day. Typically, a mandatory seven-day notice period is required, which would push the election beyond January 26.
A senior NMC official confirmed that further procedures related to the mayor’s election would commence only after the reservation for the mayor’s post is formally announced.
