The Railways has extended the deadline for the redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station to March 2027, citing the challenges of carrying out large-scale construction at a busy, fully functional heritage station.
The announcement was made by Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Central Railway’s Nagpur Division, Vinayak Garg, during an interaction with the media on Monday. He was speaking after a briefing by the Railway Minister on budget allocations for Central India and Maharashtra.
The project was earlier scheduled to be completed by December 2026. However, officials have decided to proceed cautiously to ensure that train operations and passenger movement are not disrupted. Garg said redevelopment work is being carried out at a “live” station while preserving the heritage structure of the iconic building, which has slowed the pace of construction.
Updating on Ajni Railway Station, the DRM said its redevelopment deadline has been revised to October 2026, instead of the earlier target of completion by this summer. Ajni is being developed as a satellite station to Nagpur, with four new platforms coming up on the eastern side. Once operational, several trains will be shifted from Nagpur station to Ajni to ease congestion.
As per railway plans, trains running towards Balharshah and Badnera are likely to originate or terminate at Ajni, which is expected to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
On Nagpur station, Garg added that the project also includes major yard remodelling work aimed at improving safety and creating additional capacity for better passenger amenities in the future.
He further said that redevelopment work at Godhani Railway Station is progressing as scheduled. The station is being expanded to four platforms, including a home platform like Nagpur station, to strengthen suburban and regional rail connectivity.
On overall infrastructure development, Garg noted that track capacity expansion across the division is largely complete. However, tunnelling work at Darakho for the third and fourth lines on the Nagpur–Itarsi route has slowed due to delays by the contractor.
He added that the Nagpur–Sewagram third and fourth line project is nearing completion and has already improved operational flexibility at several locations. Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has expressed confidence that the Nagpur–Nagbhir gauge conversion project will be completed by the end of 2026. Work in the forest stretch near Warora has picked up pace, with the Railways aiming to boost connectivity in interior parts of Vidarbha.
