In a major step to restore pedestrian spaces and curb illegal roadside structures, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched an extensive citywide anti-encroachment drive. The initiative is aimed at clearing footpaths and easing traffic congestion across all zones.

Under the direction of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary, the NMC Enforcement Department has deployed 15 teams for continuous action — 10 teams zone-wise and 5 teams from the headquarters to support large-scale operations.
Footpaths Occupied, Pedestrian Safety Affected
Large portions of footpaths across Nagpur have been blocked by unauthorized stalls and goods displayed outside shops. These encroachments have made pedestrian movement difficult and unsafe. The ongoing NMC drive seeks to reclaim these public spaces and ensure that walkways remain accessible.

Zone-Wise Operations Underway
Each of the corporation’s ten zones has been assigned a dedicated anti-encroachment team. Five additional teams positioned at the central office are handling major clearance tasks across densely encroached locations.
NMC Issues Warning and Appeal to Shopkeepers
The Enforcement Department has urged all shopkeepers and hawkers to:
Remove unauthorized extensions and stalls from footpaths
Avoid placing goods outside their shops
Maintain clear pedestrian pathways
Cooperate with municipal officials during the drive
Officials stated that footpaths are meant exclusively for public use and obstructing them causes inconvenience to thousands of citizens daily.
