The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has restarted demolition of acquired properties along Old Bhandara Road to facilitate the long-pending road-widening project. The demolition is being carried out under a three-day intensive schedule after compensation was finalised for most affected property owners.
The drive began on Monday with several excavators deployed to clear structures on the Mominpura–Garoba Maidan stretch, allowing the stalled expansion work to resume. District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar and Additional Municipal Commissioner Vasumana Pant visited the site to review the progress.
Around 587 properties were identified for acquisition, and compensation was largely disbursed in November. While some property owners had earlier opposed the process, legal hurdles were cleared after the High Court declined to grant relief, enabling authorities to proceed with demolition.
The widening of Old Bhandara Road — from Mayo Hospital Square to Sunil Hotel — is part of the city’s infrastructure decongestion plan. Under the project, the stretch from Mayo Hospital to Old Gandhibagh Motor Stand will be widened to 60 feet, while the section from Baghdadi Square to Sunil Hotel will be expanded to 30 feet.
Officials said the removal of remaining structures will help start full-scale road expansion work soon, easing traffic congestion in the old city areas of Nagpur.
