At a time when consumers are increasingly concerned about hygiene and adulteration in milk products, the College of Veterinary Medicine under Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries University (MAFSU) has started its own milk and dairy products sales centre at its Telangkhedi farm.
The initiative has been launched as part of a student start-up programme.Integrated with the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course, the venture is drawing a growing number of Nagpur residents seeking pure milk, paneer and khoya prepared under scientific supervision. In January alone, the centre recorded sales worth ₹1.84 lakh.In line with the Veterinary Council of India’s emphasis on skill-based education, Animal Product Processing Technology has been included in the third year of the degree programme.
The subject covers milk and dairy products, as well as meat and meat products, along with a mandatory internship component.As part of hands-on training, the Department of Animal Product Processing Technology has set up the dairy sales unit at the Livestock Research and Animal Production Centre (Farm) in Telangkhedi.
Students, guided by faculty and staff, hygienically prepare and package products such as curd, paneer and khoya.Cow’s milk is being sold at ₹60 per litre, while buffalo milk is priced at ₹70 per litre.Encouraged by the university, the Dairy Technology College at Warud has also begun producing value-added dairy items. Soon, products such as malai pedha, kalakand barfi, Mysore Pak and shrikhand manufactured there will be made available at the Nagpur centre.
