A dramatic moment unfolded at Bor Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra’s Wardha district when a rare black leopard was spotted moving through the forest. As footage of the sighting emerged, excitement quickly spread among forest officials and wildlife enthusiasts.
Experts say the leopard’s unusually dark coat is the result of a genetic condition. An excess of the pigment melanin causes its skin to appear deep black rather than the typical yellowish-brown seen in most leopards.
Forest officer Rupesh Khedkar confirmed that the sighting was recorded in the core area of the sanctuary near Rahati Gate. Compared to regular leopards, this animal appeared strikingly darker. The brief glimpse of the swift-moving predator left officials momentarily awestruck.
Following the sighting, patrolling in the area has been intensified to monitor the leopard’s movements. Authorities have also urged tourists and local residents to maintain discipline and exercise caution within forest zones.
While the Bor region is known for its healthy leopard population, sightings of melanistic (black) leopards remain exceptionally rare.
