The MIDC Police have arrested a dreaded criminal serving a life sentence who had been absconding while on parole, along with his associates, for allegedly executing an armed robbery and extortion at a bar in the city.
The incident took place on March 13, 2026, at Lenzed Restaurant and Bar on Sangam Road under the limits of MIDC Police Station Nagpur. According to police, the prime accused, Ajit Ramesh Satpute (37), along with six accomplices, entered the establishment and allegedly threatened the bar manager with a pistol. He is also accused of calling the bar owner and demanding ransom.
The gang allegedly looted around Rs 20,000 in cash from the counter and forcibly took away several costly foreign liquor bottles displayed at the bar. Based on the complaint filed by the management, police registered Crime No. 167/2026 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
Taking immediate cognisance of the gravity of the offence, special teams were constituted under the supervision of senior officers of Zone 1 and the MIDC Division. Acting on specific intelligence, police raided a residence in Vaibhav Nagar, Wanadongri, where four accused were apprehended.
Those arrested include Ajit Ramesh Satpute (37), Pritam alias Maggi Borkute (22), Harshal Pramod Uprikar (19), and Badal Ratnakar Girsawale (21). Subsequently, two more accused — Rakesh Jhakanlal Patle (37) and Akhilesh Ramji Pandey (43) — were detained from their homes. A minor involved in the offence was taken into custody and later handed over to his parents as per procedure.
During the operation, police seized a foreign-made pistol with a magazine worth Rs 25,000, two live cartridges valued at Rs 2,000, an iron knife, a folding steel rod, a white Swift car (MH-40-CQ-6296) estimated at Rs 4 lakh, and foreign liquor bottles collectively valued at Rs 50,000. The total seizure amounts to several lakhs.
Police officials stated that Satpute has a history of serious crimes registered across multiple police stations in Nagpur. He had been convicted in a previous case and sentenced to life imprisonment but had been evading arrest after failing to return from parole. Authorities said he had managed to escape police action on several occasions before being apprehended in the present case.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of senior officers of Zone 1 and the MIDC Division, led by Senior Police Inspector Gokul Mahajan and his investigative team.
Further probe is underway.
