Water consumers in Nagpur may soon witness an increase in their monthly bills, as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has proposed a 5% hike in water tariffs across all categories. The proposal has been initiated by the civic body’s water works department and is currently under consideration.
As per provisions under Clause 56(B) of the Nagpur City Water Rate Assessment and Collection Bylaws, 2009, the municipal commissioner is empowered to approve a tariff hike of up to 5% in a financial year without requiring approval from the general body. However, such a decision must be placed before the standing committee for information. Any increase beyond 5% would mandatorily require approval from the general body.
Civic officials have cited rising operational and maintenance costs, along with financial pressures on the municipal body, as key reasons behind the proposed revision. If approved, the hike will be applicable across residential, commercial, institutional, and slum connection categories.
The move comes amid ongoing concerns among citizens regarding water supply issues, including irregular supply, billing discrepancies, and meter inaccuracies. Observers believe the proposal could trigger public debate, especially if service-related concerns remain unresolved alongside the tariff increase.
Further developments are expected once the proposal is formally reviewed and placed before the concerned authorities.
