In a major push to strengthen the healthcare system, the State government has initiated the addition of around 1,270 postgraduate (PG) medical seats in government medical colleges.
The move includes launching new PG courses and expanding existing intake, aiming to increase the number of specialist doctors in the coming years.To support the expansion, the government has approved a fee payment of ₹33.69 crore. The step is expected to significantly improve medical education infrastructure and help meet the rising demand for specialised healthcare services.
The process began with the issuance of subject-wise Certificates of Necessity, followed by securing Consent of Affiliation from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. As per guidelines of the National Medical Commission, online applications were submitted between March 2 and March 31, 2026.
A total of 34 medical colleges participated in the proposal—21 colleges applied for 699 PG seats, while 13 others sought approval for 571 seats, taking the total to 1,270.To ensure smooth implementation and infrastructure readiness, the government has also arranged a temporary fund support of ₹99.56 crore. This funding will facilitate the creation of 571 PG seats across 13 medical colleges.
The expansion will benefit institutions across several districts, including Mumbai, Kolhapur, Nashik, Amravati, Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Nandurbar, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Washim, Dharashiv, and Baramati.
