The Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti (VRAS) will observe ‘Maharashtra Nishedh Din’ on May 1 by hoisting black flags at Samvidhan Square, according to a press release issued by its official secretary, Amol Radke.
The decision to mark the day as a protest was taken during a meeting of the organisation’s leaders held on April 22 at the residence of city president Naresh Nimje.
VARS alleged that Maharashtra is burdened with unsustainable debt and is struggling to service loans or clear dues worth thousands of crores to contractors. The organisation also claimed that the state has failed to generate adequate employment or meet basic civic needs.
The committee further stated that Vidarbha continues to face issues such as irrigation backlog, agrarian distress, malnutrition, and lack of industrial development.
Citing Article 3 of the Constitution, the leaders reiterated their demand for separate statehood under Mission 2027. Citizens have been urged to participate in the protest by wearing black bands and joining the demonstration.
Key organisers, including Mukesh Masurkar and Anubhau Kedar, have appealed for large-scale public participation across the Vidarbha region.
