A major part of East and North Nagpur is likely to face disruption in drinking water supply after a 1,200-mm pipeline at the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP) was damaged. According to Orange City Water (OCW), a borewell drilling machine punctured the 1,200-mm diameter raw water rising main near Juni Kamptee village.
The damaged pipeline is crucial for the Kanhan WTP, carrying nearly 65% of the raw water drawn from the river from the intake well to the treatment facility. The puncture has resulted in substantial water loss, significantly affecting the plant’s treatment capacity.
To undertake emergency repairs, OCW has scheduled a shutdown on Monday from 10.30 am for around three hours. As a result, water supply through 42 Elevated Service Reservoirs (ESRs) in the Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, Lakadganj and Nehru Nagar zones is expected to be partially affected. The disruption is likely to cause inconvenience to residents in these densely populated areas.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with unregulated drilling activities. Authorities have stressed the need for stricter regulations, including penal action for damage to public infrastructure and mandatory prior approval from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) before carrying out any drilling or excavation work. Citizens have been advised to store water in advance and use it judiciously.
