Nagpur is likely to receive widespread rainfall from July 2 or 3 as a weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to become active, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The southwest monsoon officially arrived in Nagpur on Tuesday after making rapid progress from Sironcha in Gadchiroli district and covering most parts of Vidarbha.
According to Dr. Praveen Kumar, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the monsoon advanced into Vidarbha from the Arabian Sea branch after moving through Konkan, Pune and Solapur. It has since covered large parts of Maharashtra.
Nagpur city recorded 6.8 mm of rainfall on Tuesday and 7.3 mm on Wednesday, while only 0.2 mm was recorded on Thursday. Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to intensify from July 2 onwards, bringing a more active monsoon spell to the region.
So far in June, Nagpur district has received 46.7% of its normal monthly rainfall.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall in Nagpur, Wardha, Akola, Amravati and Buldhana districts on Friday. A similar alert has also been issued for Nagpur, Washim, Yavatmal and Buldhana. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for the entire Vidarbha region on Sunday and Monday.
Cloudy skies and intermittent showers have also led to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures across the region. Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2°C on Thursday. Gondia was the hottest place in Vidarbha at 36.6°C, while Chandrapur and Washim recorded the lowest maximum temperature at 32.6°C.
