A 43-year-old construction worker was allegedly hacked to death with an axe while sleeping outside his rented house in Nagpur’s Mankapur area in the early hours of Saturday.
The brutal murder has sent shockwaves through the locality.The deceased was identified as Mohtab Singh Sohanlal Choudhary (43), a resident of LIC Colony, Godhani Railway. He had been living with his wife, Geeta, in a rented house at Jameel Society in Mankapur. He is survived by his wife, two married daughters and a son. Choudhary worked as a mason to support his family.
According to police, the couple had dinner on Friday night and spent some time talking before going to sleep. Choudhary slept in an open room outside the house, while his wife slept indoors. At around 2 a.m. on Saturday, an unidentified assailant allegedly attacked him repeatedly with an axe. Hearing his screams, his wife rushed outside and found him lying in a pool of blood.
The attacker fled the scene under the cover of darkness. Neighbours gathered after hearing the commotion and rushed the injured man to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.The Mankapur Police registered a case of murder against an unidentified accused and launched an investigation.
The Crime Branch has detained one suspect for questioning. Police are probing all possible angles, including personal rivalry, old enmity and other possible motives, as the exact reason behind the killing is yet to be established.
