The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to develop 12 sports grounds and 12 public parks across the city as part of the first phase of its Amrit Mahotsav year initiative.
Under the project, each of Nagpur’s six Assembly constituencies will get two sports grounds and two parks, with every facility being developed around a unique theme.The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Leader of the Ruling Party Narendra ‘Balya’ Borkar.
The civic body has set an ambitious long-term target of creating 75 sports grounds and 75 public parks across Nagpur.To oversee the project, Mayor Nita Thakre has constituted a committee comprising elected representatives and senior civic officials, with Borkar serving as its chairman. The committee reviewed the project’s progress at a meeting held on Monday in the Standing Committee Hall.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Nita Thakre, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Additional Commissioners Ankit, Muruganantham and Milind Meshram, Sports Committee Chairperson Darshani Dhawad, Deputy Commissioners Ganesh Rathod and Mangesh Khawale, Tree Protection Officer Amol Chaurapagar, Sports Officer Dr. Piyush Ambulkar, and environmental expert Dilip Chinchmalatpure.
During the meeting, Borkar stressed that sports grounds should be developed primarily to support athletes, while parks should be designed to cater to the needs of senior citizens and children.
He also instructed officials to replace old and unusable equipment in parks and playgrounds with modern installations to improve public amenities and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
