At least five passengers were injured after a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus allegedly went out of control and crashed into three parked school buses in Latur on Monday afternoon, reportedly after a passenger grabbed the steering wheel while the vehicle was in motion.
The incident occurred around 2.30 pm on the Latur–Ausa road.
According to officials, the bus was travelling from Latur to Ausa when a male passenger allegedly entered the driver’s cabin and suddenly yanked the steering wheel. The unexpected action caused the driver to lose control, following which the bus veered off course and collided with three school buses parked along the roadside before overturning.
Latur depot manager Rathod said the passenger allegedly shouted, “I want to die,” before interfering with the steering. Although the accident caused panic among passengers, no fatalities were reported. Five passengers sustained minor injuries and were shifted to a government hospital for treatment. The driver, Mahadev Devrao Devgunde (50), suffered serious injuries to his hand and face and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Latur.
A video of the aftermath has surfaced on social media, showing the injured driver confronting the alleged accused. In the footage, the bloodied driver is seen holding the man by the collar while bystanders accuse him of endangering the lives of everyone on board. The passenger was also reportedly assaulted by another commuter before police intervened.
Police have detained the accused following a complaint lodged by the bus driver. An investigation into the incident is underway, and further details are awaited.
