The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and  Nationalist Student Congress, the students wing of Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has strongly opposed the measures undertaken by the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) to conduct students council elections.
They also boycotted the meeting called by the varsity to discuss issues related to the students council elections. Other students’ unions too are opposing the methods adopted by the university to conduct the students council elections, however, BJP backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has come out is support of the university. The meeting was held at RTMNU’s convocation hall.
The office bearers and members of the NSUI and NCP’s students wing staged a demonstration and burnt election process guide books. They raised question over appointment of Dr. Abhay Mudgal as University students welfare director. During the meeting, the representatives had alleged that Mudgal was appointed to benefit ABVP.
Students’ leader Ajit Singh said that in the name of elections, the government and the University are cheating the students. The elections are expected to be held at Nagpur University on the pattern of the student body elections in the university at national level. Nationalist Youth Congress President Shailendra Tiwari said  the election process adopted by the university is a violation of the democratic process.
Since 1994 the new University Act was implemented after the introduction of a system of electing student based on merit, without holding an open election. In 1996, for the first time elections were held under new procedure. The university-affiliated organisations opposed it.
Along with this, there was a demand for an open election. The Maharashtra Public University Act 16 applies to the Maharashtra University Act 1994. There is a provision for an open election. Under this law, elections will be held for the first time to the students’ body. The meeting was called to inform the students’ unions about this..
