In a major move towards safer and smarter urban mobility, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in collaboration with Keltron, has launched a pilot deployment of AI-powered speed sensing cameras on the Omkar Nagar Square to Manewada Square stretch. This initiative is part of the ambitious ₹7,197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project aimed at transforming the city’s traffic landscape.
Under Phase 1 of the project rollout, smart traffic management systems have already been implemented at 10 key junctions across the city. The newly operational Ring Road segment between Omkar Nagar and Manewada Square—known for high traffic density and frequent speeding violations—is the first to receive a complete deployment of cutting-edge speed radar technology.
The installed units include:
- Radar-based speed sensors
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
- High-intensity strobe lighting for night-time visibility
These technologies work in tandem to detect over-speeding in real time, capture clear license plate images even in low light, and instantly transmit violation data to the central traffic command center.
Officials believe this AI-driven enforcement system will significantly reduce traffic violations, enhance road discipline, and contribute to overall commuter safety in the city.
Buoyed by the initial success, NMC has announced plans to extend the system to 32 identified accident-prone and high-speed corridors across Nagpur in the coming months.
