After intense public outcry and repeated accidents, the Public Works Department (PWD) Division No. 2 has finally begun repairs on the treacherous road stretch between Ambazari Bridge and Dharampeth Science College Metro Station.
The biggest hazard—a dangerous level mismatch between the cement road and adjoining paver blocks—has now been partially rectified. The mismatch, hidden beneath monsoon water, had turned into a death trap for two-wheelers.
PWD officials removed the sunken paver blocks, filled the base with compacted material, and realigned the surface to match the cement height. “The base was re-compacted, and the blocks were reinstalled correctly,” confirmed Executive Engineer Rishikant Raut.
The department explained that paver blocks were initially laid instead of cement due to multiple underground utilities—including power cables, pipelines, and telecom lines—which require easy access.
Heavy vehicles, however, caused gradual sinking of the blocks, making the road unstable. While the immediate hazard has been resolved, PWD is now considering a permanent fix, including a slim cement base beneath the blocks to prevent future depressions.
Meanwhile, Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Dharampeth Zone has stepped in. Deputy Engineer Parmod Mokade confirmed that the zone has written to PWD demanding urgent, permanent solutions. “Recurring accidents make immediate resolution non-negotiable,” he stated.
Though commuters have some relief, long-term safety still hinges on lasting structural fixes. Until then, residents remain wary—and vigilant.
