Relief and haunting memories filled the hearts of the Rupchandani family of Nagpur after security forces gunned down the terrorists responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam massacre in a decisive joint operation code‑named Operation Mahadev.
Three Lashkar‑e‑Taiba (LeT) militants, including top commander Hashim Musa—the prime conspirator and executor of the attack—along with Jibran and Abu Hamza, were killed during the Monday operation in Srinagar. All three were confirmed Pakistani nationals, with identity cards and other Pakistan‑made items recovered from the site.
A Family’s Fight for Survival
Among the survivors of the deadly assault was Simran Rupchandani, a Nagpur resident, who had been vacationing in Pahalgam with her husband Tilak Rupchandani and their young son Garv. What began as a scenic day at the Baisaran Valley meadows turned into a nightmare when the terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on tourists, killing 26 civilians—including five from Maharashtra.
In a desperate bid to survive, the family leapt down a steep slope to escape the line of fire. Simran fractured her leg during the fall, but the family managed to hide until the firing subsided.
“It was just a matter of a few minutes,” said Tilak Rupchandani, recalling the panic as “people ran helter‑skelter, screaming for help, not knowing which direction to go.”
The Rupchandanis were eventually rescued and brought back to Nagpur, where Simran underwent treatment for her injuries.
Operation Mahadev Brings Closure
The news of the terrorists’ elimination has brought a sense of closure for the family, though the trauma remains fresh. Security forces meticulously tracked the attackers using local intelligence and electronic surveillance, eventually cornering them in Srinagar’s outskirts.
The operation not only neutralized the militants but also dismantled a key cross‑border LeT module. Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament that evidence including Pakistani IDs and military‑grade equipment confirmed the attackers’ origins and role in the massacre.
‘Justice, But Memories Remain’
While grateful for the swift action by the forces, the Rupchandani family admitted that the emotional scars will take time to heal.
“We are relieved that those behind the killing of innocent tourists are no more. But the fear and those moments in Pahalgam will remain with us forever,” said Tilak, speaking on behalf of the family.
For survivors like Simran Rupchandani, Operation Mahadev represents justice served—yet a reminder of the fragility of life in the face of terrorism.
