A major disruption occurred at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, after an oxygen supply error forced the suspension of surgical operations on Saturday. The issue arose in the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department when a problem in the oxygen pipeline affected ongoing surgeries, causing significant inconvenience for both doctors and patients.
According to hospital sources, a technical glitch in the oxygen supply lines led to an abrupt drop in oxygen levels in the operating theaters. As a precautionary measure, surgeries were immediately halted to avoid any risk to patients. The problem was traced to the medical gas pipeline system, which supplies oxygen to multiple operation theaters.
The incident has raised concerns about the hospital’s infrastructure and maintenance. The Medical Superintendent confirmed that the oxygen supply issue impacted three major surgeries, forcing doctors to postpone procedures. Departments such as ENT and Medicine were particularly affected.
Hospital authorities have assured that the issue has now been rectified, and an internal investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the failure. Officials have also emphasized the need for a thorough inspection of the entire medical gas system to prevent such incidents in the future.
Why Do Such Incidents Occur?
In 2012, a similar incident occurred due to an error in the medical gas supply, affecting oxygen delivery during surgery.
Experts say that even minor technical faults in the oxygen pipeline can have serious consequences for patients.
Regular maintenance and monitoring of the medical gas pipeline system are essential to avoid such life-threatening situations.
