In the past few days of continuous rainfall, several key traffic signals in the city have been functioning irregularly, switching on and off suddenly. Despite the risk this poses to road safety, the municipal authorities appear to be taking the issue lightly.
Signals at major intersections such as Bardi Chowk, Ajni Chowk, Ajni Square, Jhansi Rani Square, Shankar Nagar, Kasturchand Park, Airport T-Point, and Automotive Square have been operating unpredictably. Often, the signals remain off for long periods without warning, forcing motorists to navigate without traffic control. This lack of timer display further adds to commuters’ difficulties.
According to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s electricity department, the problem is due to timers being damaged by water ingress during heavy rains. While repairs have been carried out at some locations, similar faults have been reported at others.
The department stated that work is underway to replace the current ITMS system at 10 major junctions with upgraded smart poles and new controllers. The transition process is ongoing, and once completed, the problem of malfunctioning timers is expected to be resolved.
