While crores of rupees are being spent on development works at Medical College (GMCH), the ground reality of patient services remains unchanged. The emergency and patient care systems have not improved. Even today, critically ill patients face huge struggles to get an OPD or emergency stretcher. If a stretcher is found, it often comes with delays due to careless hospital staff.
On Friday morning, Indrajeet, a resident of Karajgaon, Amravati, brought his pregnant wife to the hospital. Before she could be admitted, the woman’s labor pains intensified. With the help of relatives, he rushed her toward the ward, but due to the unavailability of a stretcher, she had to be carried on a tricycle. Just as they reached Ward No. 69, she delivered the baby right in front of the ward.
The negligence in the system was once again exposed. Fortunately, the timely intervention of the doctors saved both the mother and the child. The woman was later shifted inside and treated under the supervision of doctors.
The situation created panic among relatives and exposed the poor management once again. It was also alleged that the family was first asked for an Aadhaar card and other documents, after which the staff wasted time instead of providing immediate medical aid.
According to doctors, both mother and newborn are now safe. However, the hospital administration has once again come under question. The lack of stretchers and negligence of staff in emergency situations continues to put patients’ lives at risk. Relatives have demanded strict inquiry into the incident and accountability of those responsible.
