In a move aimed at strengthening India’s citrus sector, the ICAR–Central Citrus Research Institute (CCRI), Nagpurhas introduced nine elite exotic citrus varieties from the United States.
This marks the second batch of citrus introductions undertaken through coordination with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Riverside, California.
Dr Dilip Ghosh, Director, ICAR-CCRI, Nagpur, said the newly introduced varieties include US Superna, Valentine Pummelo Hybrid and Fukumoto Navel Orange. The batch also features Frost Washington Navel Orange, Lane Late Navel Orange and Nules Clementine.
Other citrus varieties introduced under the programme are Reed Marsh Grapefruit, Gold Nugget Mandarin and Bream Tarocco Blood Orange.
The initiative is expected to support research, diversification and improvement of citrus cultivation in India by providing access to high-quality international germplasm.
