The Anti-Encroachment Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday, February 5, launched action against alleged unauthorized construction at Poonam Chambers. As part of the operation, officials began removing goods and materials from Poonam Bazar functioning in the basement area of the building.
Civic officials indicated that the basement premises were being used for commercial activities in violation of approved building norms. The enforcement team initiated clearance of stocked items from the shops, marking the beginning of further action to address unauthorized use of the space.
Citywide Anti-Encroachment Drive Underway
The action forms part of a larger citywide anti-encroachment campaign currently being carried out by the NMC. In a major initiative to restore pedestrian spaces and tackle illegal roadside structures, the civic body has intensified enforcement across all zones of Nagpur.
Under the direction of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary, the NMC Enforcement Department has deployed 15 dedicated teams for continuous operations. Of these, 10 teams are working zone-wise, while five teams from the headquarters are supporting large-scale clearance drives in heavily encroached areas.
Focus on Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Flow
Large stretches of footpaths in various parts of the city have been obstructed by unauthorized stalls and goods displayed outside shops, creating difficulties and safety risks for pedestrians. The ongoing drive aims to reclaim these public pathways and ensure smoother pedestrian movement, while also easing traffic congestion.
Each of the corporation’s ten zones has been assigned a separate anti-encroachment squad, with additional central teams handling major operations in densely affected locations.
Civic Appeal to Shopkeepers and Hawkers
The NMC Enforcement Department has appealed to shopkeepers and hawkers to voluntarily remove unauthorized extensions and roadside stalls, refrain from placing goods outside their shops, and keep footpaths clear for public use. Officials emphasized that footpaths are meant exclusively for pedestrians and that obstructions inconvenience thousands of citizens every day.
Further inspections and enforcement action are expected to continue in the coming days as the civic body sustains its drive against encroachments and unauthorized constructions across Nagpur.
