Mobile theft, unauthorised SIM connections, and rising cyber fraud have made digital safety a pressing concern for Nagpur residents. The Union Ministry of Communications has a free tool that most people don’t know about — the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ portal and app — and officials are now urging citizens across the region to use it.
The platform offers three key services. If a phone is stolen or lost, users can log the IMEI number on the portal to block the device across all networks through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). Even if the thief inserts a new SIM, the system alerts both the owner and the nearest police station automatically. Once recovered, the phone can be unblocked through the same portal.
To check how many mobile numbers are registered in your name — a common target for fraudsters — the TAFCOP facility on the portal lets users identify and report unauthorised connections instantly.
The portal also serves as a hub for cyber fraud awareness, offering guidance on protecting oneself from fake calls, OTP scams, digital arrest threats, and online impersonation.
The Sanchar Saathi app is available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The portal can be accessed at sancharsaathi.gov.in. All services are free of charge.
