Nagpur’s Shaheed Gowari Flyover is under fire after a spate of accidents—three in just 24 hours—sparked panic and forced the PWD’s World Bank Division into immediate action. The flyover, known for its narrow width, has become a hotspot for reckless overtaking and speeding, putting lives at daily risk.
The chaos began Tuesday morning when a Swift car abruptly braked, leading a WagonR to crash into it. Luckily, no injuries were reported. But by 2:20 pm, tragedy struck—a private bus rammed into an Ola moped head-on. The rider, Rajesh Kose, got trapped under the bus and was critically injured. Earlier, a speeding Volkswagen Polo collided head-on with a Bolero pickup, injuring three, including a Tata Zest driver.
Reacting swiftly, PWD Executive Engineer Krusha Gharde announced a ban on overtaking and began installing ‘No Overtaking’ signs. “The road is tarred but too narrow. Human error is the root cause,” she said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani added that overspeeding and rash driving were behind most mishaps. He’s pushing for speed limit signs, dividers, and even speed cameras.
With rising injuries and public safety at stake, officials are finally waking up to a dangerous reality: the Shaheed Gowari Flyover, once built to ease traffic, now threatens the very commuters it was meant to help.
