Toll plazas on national highways will stop accepting cash payments from April 10, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The decision comes as part of an amendment to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, aimed at streamlining and speeding up toll collection.
Under the new rules, vehicles without a valid FASTag or with a non-functional tag will not be allowed to pay in cash. Instead, such users can opt for digital payment via Unified Payments Interface, but will be charged 25% more than the standard toll fee.
For instance, if the regular toll is ?100 through FASTag, users paying via UPI without a valid FASTag will have to pay ?125.
Officials said the move is intended to reduce congestion at toll plazas. With FASTag-enabled vehicles allowing automatic deduction, traffic flow is expected to improve significantly and waiting times to decrease.
